The department was founded in 1946 as the Division for Topographical Anatomy and Operative Surgery,
a unit of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Warsaw. In 1956 it was taken over by the Polish Academy
of Sciences and the name was changed to the Department of Experimental Surgery of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
In 1967 the Department amalgamated with other medical research units of the Academy and the Medical Research
of the Polish Academy of Sciences was founded. The changes of the research profile of the Department during
the following years led to a change of its name to the Department of Surgical Research and Transplantology.
Previous Directors were professors of surgery: Jan Zaorski, Jan Raczynski, Jan Nielubowicz, Waldemar L. Olszewski.
Organizational structure
The department is divided into clinical and research parts. The clinical division is located in the Central
Clinical Hospital, Ministry of Internal Affairs. The legal link with the Insitute is based on agreement and
scientific cooperation between the two institutions. The following clinical divisions participate in cooperation:
Dep. Of Gastroenterological Surgery and Transplantation, Nephrology, Gastroenterology, Cardiology, Gynecology &
Obitetrics, Dermatology and General and Vascular Surgery. The Research division is located in the Institute's
building.It has it's own animal husbandry.
Courses and Conferences
Courses and conferences on problems of clinical and experimental immunology in
transplantation, infections and tumors are periodically organized. See: Conferences and courses announcement
Offers for cooperation
Domestic and foreign exchange of fellows and programmes in surgical immunology are welcomed. A number of successful cooperation programmes is carried out with research in centers Egypt, Norway, Great Britain, USA, Japan, Germany and India. A possibility exists for postdoctoral studies.

Patients with problems of limb edema, inflammation, ulcers, diabetic foot,
general immune deficiencies, oncological complicatons and candidates for organ or cell transplantation should contact our
secretary office.
